The Rolling Pin & Naming the Desire
My mom always rolled out her dough with a white marble rolling pin with wooden handles on a white marble slab. It’s a childhood memory I love. Flour in her hair and on her sweater. Love sprinkled all around.
So when I was first dating Dan, he asked me, in all the world, what do I want? Like a material thing… Like a mountain cabin or a fancy dress? I vividly recall saying I wanted a marble rolling pin. That’s really all I wanted. I was living on very little at the time and could only afford eggs and bread. (This was back when they were affordable.) I had little but was very content. And all I wanted was a rolling pin.
Shortly after that conversation, Dan found one at the AF thrift store to surprise me. Without ever seeing what my mom’s looked like, he brought me home a near replica! You’d have thought he hung the moon!
Having a rolling pin like my mom’s was a little dream I had in my heart that I didn’t even voice or know was there until Dan asked me about the desires of my heart. And when that was fulfilled, wow! That little dream had a bigger fulfillment in my heart than I could have imagined!
Truly, a longing fulfilled, even a little one, is a tree of life.
A Prayer to Pray When You Can’t Find the Words:
Father, we’ve had so much hope deferred over the years. Pour out your healing oil on us and minister to us. Thank you for your loving kindness and extravagant mercy. Help us be brave enough to name the longings of our hearts. And help us be wise enough to trust you to fulfill them. In Jesus’ name, amen
