Sugar Cookie Scraps & the Sweetness of God’s Promises
Sugar Cookies like Promises
This week, we’ve been baking up a storm! My youngest found an amazing recipe for “no chill” roll-out sugar cookies. We made them with gluten free flour and then iced them with almond and vanilla flavors to make us want them even more. As if we needed more incentives.
I rolled them out with my white marble rolling pin, a symbol of a little hope fulfilled.
As I cut out the little star shapes, I noticed how much I love the scraps. The bits in between that didn’t make the cut. (See what I did there.) We popped some of those scraps straight into our mouths. Other scraps, we rolled back up in to a ball to be dusted in flour and rolled out all over again.
But the little morsels of scraps had me thinking…
Cookie dough scraps are like the promises of God. They are a taste of what’s to come. They are delightful in and of themselves, even before they turn into the full form of a sugar cookie. Delightful even before they are pulled warm from the oven. Delightful even before they are cooled and iced with delectable flavor. Each part of the process has a purpose. And each step can be savored.
The taste of God’s promises are just as delightful as the fulfillment of the promises. Because when God says it, it’s good as done. And when we put our faith and belief in the Lord, that He keeps His word, I think this is one of the greatest delights to our Father.
“I serve you, Lord. Comfort me with your love, just as you have promised.” Psalm 119:76
Waiting on God’s Promises
On our way to church last Sunday, my youngest starts reading to me. It’s a devotional about an old woman named Elizabeth and how she had to wait on God’s timing to have a child. And how her child became the promised child to prepare the way in the wilderness and foretell the coming Messiah. My daughter read this devotional to me twice on the way to church, saying this…
God can be trusted to keep His promises.
Then we get to church and the message is about an old man named Simeon. How Holy Spirit promised him that he would see the Messiah before he died. How he held baby Jesus and praised God for this Promised Child. Surely, he saw the face of the Savior! And how God kept His promise. “If God says it, if God promises it… it will be done!” Our pastor gave us example after example, saying this…
God can be trusted to keep His promises.
Later this week, I read a powerful devotional from a dear friend, Jeff Davis. He was talking about a barren woman named Hannah, how she waited in agony praying for a child. How she was promised a child and God gave the ability to conceive and she had a son named Samuel. Jeff said, “When God is silent, cling to His promises.” Yes and amen! I’ve been doing that this very week.
God can be trusted to keep His promises.
And though His timing is almost never the same as ours, His timing can be trusted.
Elizabeth, Simeon, and Hannah had a lot in common… they were all deeply longing for someone and they poured out their longings to the Lord in prayer and living rightly before Him.
Praise Him in all stages of His Promises
Like the rolling pin, let’s praise God as we name our longings.
Like the sugar cookie scraps, let’s praise God when He gives us His promise of what’s to come.
And like that warm cookie in your mouth, let’s praise God for all the fulfilled promises are enjoying in right now.

A Prayer to Pray When You Can’t Find the Words:
Father, thank you for your promises that are good as gold. Thank you that if you said it, it’s good as done. Thank you for speaking into existence things that did not previously exist. I trust you to fulfill your promises to me.
In Jesus’ name, amen
Pin it to remember!
