Until I heard this sermon, I understood the weight of this election but not my own personal responsibility in this election. This post is a sermon notes MashUp, sprinkled with some extra and thoughts and doubts on the importance of a Christians vote.

Does your vote really even matter?

Should Christians vote? Shouldn’t we do “more important” things? Before the last presidential election, I just lost my husband, survived a pandemic shut-in, and had all my registrations still a mess from trying to finish the paperwork to get moved from one state to another. I was a wreck running all over town trying to make sure I had what I needed so I could be squared away and vote.

I told my story of doubling over backwards to be able to vote to a friend who said sarcastically, “And I’m sure your vote really mattered.” And I have to confess that I have let those words hold too much power ever since. Did it matter? Was it worth all that trouble? But my mentor in her 90s, also widowed, told me that since she was 18, she never missed an election. And something in me rose up when she said that. Yes, it’s a pain what I need to go through again this year to get squared away. But I’ve got to try.

“No matter what happens in this election, God is still on the throne. Jesus Christ is still Lord, God, and King… And He will come back someday to set everything right, no matter how bad things are. But if that’s true, why even bother to get involved in politics and why even bother to vote? Your vote will effect people.” -Hudnall

Should Christians Vote?

“It’s estimated that over 30 MILLION Followers of Jesus Christ did NOT vote in the 2020 elections. In this election, George Barnum estimated that 41 MILLION Christians will not vote. Since the beginning of our nation, people have died to give us the right to vote and the right to have religious freedom.”

“The majority of Christians don’t understand the urgency of this hour. This is easily THE MOST IMPORTANT election in our history to date.” -Pastor Hudnall

But I get it. You might be thinking one of these common myths about the role of Christians in voting…

3 Myths about Christian Votes

” In God’s Word, we have many examples of men and women who were either involved in government and politics OR who boldly spoke into societal issues, including government and politics: Moses, Deborah, Daniel , Esther, Mordecai, Nehemiah, John the Baptist, Jesus.”

They fought for freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom from genocide, freedom from slavery and racism…

And Esther faced the possible consequences of petitioning the king by saying, “If I die, I die!” She knew taking a stance for what right might take her out, but she knew that at least she’d go out standing up for what’s right. We aren’t even facing death here, people. Just the inconvenience of taking time out of our schedule to pray, do a little research, and figure out the logistics voter registration and ballot.

This is the enemy’s easiest way to get you out of the fight for this nation. Just be passive and don’t stand up for the children and security and future and families of our nation.

[“Just pray.” If you only pray for your neighbor’s kid, but don’t stop them from getting run over by a car when it’s in your power to do so, then what good are your prayers? “Do not withhold good from the deserving when it is within your power to act” (Proverbs 3:27). “We need to bring our Biblical worldview into our politics. To be silent on these issues is to be disobedient.”

“Why choose the lesser of two evils? I choose Jesus.” Or, “Why bother to vote when I don’t like either candidate.”

It’s true. We have two very human, very flawed candidates. But the reality is that there are only 2 choices. Neither fully align with God. But we’ll never have a perfect human on the ballot.

In Israel, we had some godly kings like Jehoshaphat and Josiah who loved God with all they have. But Jezebel operated in manipulation and control and sent a nation into spiritual and moral darkness. She massacred God’s prophets, persecuted God’s people, stole land from righteous Naboth and then killed him, and promoted murder, child sacrifice, and sexual depravity. God knew we needed a Jehu to overthrow her… Jehu was a rascal: prideful, arrogant, erratic. He was mean. A wrecking ball. But when God needed to deal with Jezebel, He raised up a Jehu. That’s what it took to take Jezebel down. Does all that sound too familiar for comfort?

We don’t have 2 godly choices. But we have one candidate that aligns against God’s compass and one that’s closer aligned with God’s Word.

[Here’s the deal. God gives you free will. You get to choose if you stay on your side of the solid yellow line when you drive down a road. You get to choose if you murder someone or bless someone. And you get to voice a Biblical worldview through your vote or you get to throw in the towel, letting darkness disciple our children.]

“There’s an unbiblical understanding that no matter what I do, God’s just going to do whatever He chooses.

Here’s truth. A sovereign God made a sovereign choice to give us a choice.

He said, “If my people called by my name will humble themselves and pray and turn from their wicked ways, I will turn from heaven and heal their land,” (2 Chronicles 7:14). IF my people do, I will. IF my people don’t, I won’t. Fasting, praying, and yes, voting is our responsibility.” – Hudnall

Politics have become theological

“People are saying, ‘You’re too political. You need to stay in your lane. But here’s the reality… I’ve never left my lane! Politics have come into my lane! Politics have now become spiritual and theological. And the church has to respond in this hour. For Christians to be silent on these issues, is to be disobedient to what God’s called us to do.” -Pastor Hudnall

“Politics are part of religion in such a country as this, and Christians must do this duty to their country as part of this duty to God. [This nation will be blessed or cursed] according to the course Christians take in politics.” – Charles Finney

“If Christians stay out of politics, then we are letting other dogmas influence and control our society. Christians need to get involved so Christian views are represented… Not because we want a theocracy. Not because we want to control people. It’s because we love people! And we believe Biblical values are the best way to love people and lead to the flourishing of our society.”

A Prayer to Pray When You Can’t Find the Words

Dear Lord,

You are on the throne. There’s no other name under heaven by which we may be saved. We trust in you.

We ask you to pour mercy out on our nation. Lord, help us see the ability to vote as a privilege, not an inconvenience. Wake up 41 million Christians to be responsible citizens. We pray for a legal election where every fraud is exposed. We pray you raise up Godly legislators to lead this nation. We tether ourselves to your Word, not to a political party.

God, have mercy and intervene. Pull down wicked and raise up righteousness in our land. You’ve sent revival in the past. Do it again. Rend the heavens and bring heaven to earth.

In Jesus’ Mighty Name, amen
