Mama’s Bougie Hot Date Cocoa
Rich, indulgent sipping chocolate. Naturally sweetened with date sugar and maple syrup. Decadent in every way.
I call this my “hot date” cocoa because of the date sugar. Also, because it’s fun to say I have a hot date!
We call it “bougie” because it seems kind of fussy with the long list of ingredients. But each one carries its own weight adding to the body and buen sabor of this delightful spin on the Mexican hot chocolate I grew up with.

This is worth the extra time. Gathering the ingredients, the slow anticipation, simmering on the stove, and sipping, eyes closed. A comforting, stick to your bones, not too sweet treat for your soul this Valentine’s Day.

My girls spooned a touch of heavy cream on to the top and enjoyed making filigree on the cocoa. We had just as much fun making them pretty as we did enjoying these flavors.
They’ve asked for this over and over since I first created this recipe. You just might too!
Mama’s Bougie Hot Date Cocoa
Inspired, indulgent sipping cocoa. Naturally sweetened with date sugars and maple syrup.
- 2 cups organic almond milk
- 1 cup organic whole milk
- 1/3 cup cacao powder (or cocoa)
- 1/3 cup date sugar
- 1/2 tsp Celtic salt
- 2 Tbs grassfed organic butter, like Kerrygold
- 1 splash vanilla
- 1 tsp cinnamon, or more to taste
- 1 Tbs maple syrup, or more to desired sweetness
In sauce pan on the stove, whisk to combine almond milk, whole milk, cacao powder, cinnamon, date sugar, Celtic salt.
Bring to low simmer.
Add butter and vanilla.
Taste and see if you need to add a bit of maple syrup to your desired sweetness.
Pour into 2 large mugs or 3 petite tea cups. Close your eyes, breathe it in, and thoroughly enjoy.
Pin or share it for later!

Self-Care on Valentine’s
After losing my sweetheart years ago, this may be the closest thing I have to a hot date this Valentine’s. But if you’re in the same boat, trust me when I say that a cup of this sipping chocolate, warm socks, and a good book is a pretty great way to enjoy the holiday solo. I’m even looking forward to it this year! (If you need some extra TLC this week, check out this post with a list of comforting books and a free self-care gift for you. I wrote this the Valentine’s before I lost Dan. Crazy thinking about that.)
