How to Vote from a Biblical Faith-Based Perspective

How can Christians vote when the ballot has no Jesus on it? What is a believer’s role in politics and voting? How can we vote with a Biblical perspective? Here you’ll find sermon notes from “If My People” and christian voter guides

Politics have become spiritual and theological

41 MILLION Christians do not intend to vote this year according to researcher George Barna. I was on the fence myself. It’s easy to wonder, “Does my vote even matter?” If you need to back up a bit because you’re asking yourself the same thing or if Christians should even vote in the first place, then please start here in IF My People: Part One.

But if you’ve realized your vote matters now more than ever, register here to vote now: vote.gov. And vote Biblically. This article will give you a quick overview of the foundation to why Christians can and need to vote and get involved. It will help you recognize key spiritual and theological issues on the ballot this year. And it will also equip you with a framework for a Christian Voter Guide on how to vote as Biblically as possible.

“Politics are part of religion in such a country as this, and Christians must do this duty to their country as part of this duty to God. [This nation will be blessed or cursed] according to the course Christians take in politics.” – Charles Finney

“If Christians stay out of politics, then we are letting other dogmas influence and control our society. Christians need to get involved so Christian views are represented… Not because we want a theocracy. Not because we want to control people. It’s because we love people! And we believe Biblical values are the best way to love people and lead to the flourishing of our society.”

5 Foundations of Biblical Citizenship

Philippians 3:20. We are citizens in heaven, which means we need to be engaged and be the best citizens on earth. Partnering with God to see His Kingdom come and His will be done. Our allegiance is to Jesus.

Bottom line requirement to be a faithful citizen is to VOTE.

41 million Christians are planning to sit out this election. It’s note too late! Go to vote.gov and register now.

Christians are to be salt and light. To preserve the culture from moral decay and corruption. To be a light for Christ, expose darkness, declare truth.

Vote on a Biblically informed worldview. Everyone in the world, every day.

Romans 12:2 “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may be able to prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”

Get involved. Thank you to all who serve on school boards and government.

Colossians 3:17 “Whatever you do, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus.”

If we stay silent, Christians will become increasingly marginalized, ostracized, and criminalized in a secular culture. Because a Christian worldview is in direct opposition to a secular worldview. So its critical that you vote if you’re an American citizen.

God founded, first, the family; second, the church; and God also established government. As a parent, you take authority with your children. Pastors take authority with their church. So who takes authority and responsibility in our government? We, the people. Christians, vote.

And vote Biblically. Lifeway Research reports that “Only 1 of 10 Christians said the Bible shapes their political views.” That’s tragic. We are called to bring every area of our life under the authority of God’s word.

“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34). We must elect leaders who reward what’s good and punish what’s evil.

“I understand you likely don’t love either candidate. But it takes extraordinary arrogance and passivity to sentence the unborn to death, the common man to economic destruction, and the nation to communist ruin. Proverbs 29:2, “When the righteous rule, the people rejoice; but when a wicked one rules, the people groan.” There’s been a lot of groaning going on.” -Hudnall

And I will be so bold and hopeful to declare that this has already begun. On the Day of Atonement in Oct 2024, over a quarter million people in person and over TEN million online and worldwide gathered at the Mall in DC to fast and repent and pray for America and Israel.

2 Chronicles 7:14 “If MY PEOPLE humble themselves and pray and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and heal their land.”

We could be on the brink of a “suddenly”! Just don’t give up. Vote, pray, hope in Jesus Christ alone.

Crucial Biblical Issues on the Ballot this Year

  • Religious Freedom – The founders of our nation put the freedom of religion in our nation. No Christian doctor should be forced to perform and abortion. No Christian baker should be forced to make a cake that doesn’t align with his faith.
  • Biblical Gender – God created binary sex: male and female (Genesis 1:27). We have great mercy for those who are wrestling with gender confusion and dysphoria. But we cannot legitimize, encourage, and use tax dollars to pay for expensive, transgender procedures.
  • Family and Parent Rights – Harris strongly advocates for legislation to keep parents out of the decision of a minor to have transgender procedures (when our brains are not fully developed until 26 years old) and allowing the government to take the child away from a parent who disagrees with the surgery. This has happened already in Colorado. The government wants to step in and say, “We’ll be the family. We’ll provide for you. We’ll decide what’s best for you.”
  • Israel – “I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse those who curse you; and in you, all the families of the earth shall be blessed” Genesis 12:3. We need to stand as an ally to Israel. Our blessing in America is arguably due to our standing with Israel.
  • Judges and Officers – “You shall appoint judges and officers and they shall judge the people with just judgement.” Deuteronomy 16:18 Each candidate already has shown us what kind of judges they will appoint by their previously appointed judges.
  • Economy – The national debt is nearly 36 Trillion Dollars. Both parties are guilty of racking up this debt. “The borrower is the slave to the lender” (Proverbs 22:7). And most of our debt is to our national enemies. One half of a TRILLION dollars has been added to national debt in the LAST THREE WEEKS. Also, equal opportunity is not the same as Harris’ desire for redistribution and equal outcomes. This is a Marxist philosophy and it has never historically worked. My friends who are immigrants from communist countries shudder at what America is advocating.
  • Borders – We are called by God to love the immigrant and the refugee. There’s no question about that. [Some of my dearest friends and pastors are legal immigrants to the US.] But there is a legal way to enter the country and an illegal way. We do need borders, and that’s Biblical too. Acts 17:26 says, “And He has made from one blood every nation of man to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their pre-appointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings.” It’s documented that 425000 illegal immigrants to this nation have criminal records. 16000 are convicted rapists. 13000 entered the country as convicted murderers. Romans 13 says the primary purpose of government is to protect their citizens.
  • Sanctity of Life – God loves life; God gave life. If you’ve had an abortion, participated, or encouraged an abortion, the blood of Jesus washes away all sin and shame and torment from that decision. All who cry out to Jesus will be saved. But we need to work for legislation that minimizes and eliminates abortion and protects life. Is Unrestricted Abortion on the Ballot in Your State?

I felt shocked to learn about Colorado’s Amendment 79. If it passes, it will allow unrestricted full term abortions for any reason including race, sex, and physical ability. It’s barbaric infanticide. It also forces the government to use our tax dollars to pay for these “so-called free” abortions.

If you wonder, what does my vote matter? Please check out your local elections and see if there’s an abortion legislature.

If you live in Colorado, I plead that you Vote NO on Amendment 79. A minor needs parental notification to get ears pierced, but this amendment would allow minors to get abortions without even letting parents know. This promotes sexual abuse to minors too.

Your simple vote is how you can powerfully “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy” (Proverbs 31:8-9).

A Prayer to Pray When You Can’t Find the Words

Dear Lord,

You are on the throne. There’s no other name under heaven by which we may be saved. We trust in you.

We ask you to pour mercy out on our nation. Lord, help us see the ability to vote as a privilege, not an inconvenience. Wake up 41 million Christians to be responsible citizens. We pray for a legal election where every fraud is exposed. We pray you raise up Godly legislators to lead this nation. We tether ourselves to your Word, not to a political party.

God, have mercy and intervene. Pull down wicked and raise up righteousness in our land. You’ve sent revival in the past. Do it again. Rend the heavens and bring heaven to earth.

In Jesus’ Mighty Name, amen
